The history of st. valentine

In a parallel universe, on February 14th, we could all be celebrating beekeeping, travelling or even fainting – all things that the famous St Valentine is the Patron Saint of. But unsurprisingly, it’s the love and romance part of his remit that has proved a popular and enduring reason to go big on the hearts each year.

St Valentine himself it seems literally lost his head over love by defying Emperor Claudius II’s marriage ban for young soldiers and helping lovers to tie the knot. As the story goes, whilst in prison he sent a love note to his jailor’s daughter and signed it “From your Valentine” – it seems the idea stuck!

celebrate all kinds of love this valentine’s day

But what and who we celebrate on 14th February is changing, and research suggests that Valentine’s Day is no longer about just about the romantic interest in our lives. Pets, children, grandchildren and friends (particularly gal-pals) are all becoming more popular recipients of Valentine’s cards and wishes particularly with younger generations.*

valentine’s day traditions around the world

Perhaps we Brits could also learn a thing or two about spreading the love from other nations and their Valentine’s Day traditions.

In Finland and Estonia, February 14th is ‘Friend’s Day’ for sending cards and gifts to anyone from family members to friends and even neighbours. And you don’t have to be in a romantic relationship to feel the love on Valentine’s Day in Mexico. “El Día del Amor y Amistad”, which translates as “Day of Love and Friendship”, is for everyone to celebrate love in all its many forms.

We can’t all be as creative as the British microbiology student who gave his wife a card saying ‘I Love You’ made from 500,000 million bacteria he had grown. Or rich enough to gift a $40 million private jet to our loved one like Beyoncé.

Thoughtful Ways to Show You Care This Valentine’s Day

But whether it’s a thoughtfully-chosen card and flowers, a batch of heart-shaped cookies or just an extra hug – you’re letting someone know that you’re glad they’re in the world. And who doesn’t want to hear that once in a while?
